[meme] conversation hooks
Let's do a "conversation hooks" meme!
Whatsa conversation hook?
A conversation hook is basically exactly what it says on the tin. You know how you use a hook to catch a fish? You can use 'em to catch CR (character relationships), too. The best way to do that is to bait the hook with something interesting or irresistible to another character (like catnip, but we're working a fishing metaphor here).
What makes a good conversation hook?
Aside from being interesting to other characters, a good conversation hook:
* is specific enough to provide a definite direction for conversation
* can't be said of lots of characters (ie, it's not necessarily unique to your character, but it's not so common as to be dull)
* has enough breadth or depth to sustain more than a tag or two
* is important enough to your character that they want (or really, really don't want!) to talk about it
* is something that you can easily work into a conversation, EP, or log start
* is something that you want to thread about
In other words, a good conversation hook, while not necessarily a soul-deep truth, is significant, meaningful, interesting, or important to both you and your character.
How do I meme it?
So glad you asked! For each character or potential character you're currently considering, tag in separately.
1. Copy the text below into your comment.
2. Answer at least 4 questions and as many as all of them. (Feel free to delete the ones you don't answer, but don't remove the html code at the end of any line you keep.)
3. READ other people's answers.
4. Tag them with suggestions for conversations/threads/events/plots you could do together. If they agree, be prepared to follow up. If they don't seem interested, it isn't personal. (Tip: do try to be specific enough about why they might be interested in the conversation and with whom so that they aren't left wanting to answer but feeling dumb about asking what you meant.)
5. If you see something in other people's tags that makes you curious to see them log together, tell them both about it!
6. If the characters want to chat, let 'em. But don't have the whole conversation in a meme thread. If a few tags seem promising, try making a game thread! (That's not to say characters can't chat as much as you want. Just don't make the hooks boring to you before you use them.)
Because you will inevitably skim and miss things:
* yes, potential characters are allowed
* no, please don't put all of your characters in one comment
* no, you don't have to answer all the questions, but answer at least 4.
* no, you don't have to tag everyone, but you should aim to tag at least 2-3 for each character you tag in
* yes, you can tag characters with suggestions that don't include your characters
* the meme is open until people stop answering it.
Have fun!

b. Name something you don't like (preferably something you might encounter):
Dogs, I mean cops. Being a crip.
c. Name something obvious in talking to/seeing you:

g. What's something you fear?
My nightmares.

Bouncy! I’ve got more energy than I know what to do with.
d. Name something not-at-all obvious in talking to/seeing you:
I’m deeply religious in my own way. There’s a lot of things I don’t hold to, but death is sacred. And it actually really bothers me every time I hear another story of people not just letting that shit be, whether they think it’s someone’s time or not.
e. What's something you want fellow residents to know about you?
That half the time, I have no clue what the fuck they’re referring to, and it's exhausting trying to keep up.
f. What's something you don't want fellow residents to know about you (but that your player wants to reveal)?
There’s honestly not much I won’t tell people. Other than I’m afraid my grandmother sliding off the deep end and ultimately her dying are actually my fault.

k. Name one character you don't know much about who you might be interested in getting to know.
Yeah, I can’t pick one. Loki, because bonding with Thor. Percy, because how have we not done some sort of machine shit. Probably Peter just because I spend more than a little time with Annie. My player says Quill because I’m so good at taming assholes.

I need a female friendship that’s not colored by a teacher/student relationship.

Banjos freak my shit out. I can’t listen to them.
c. Name something obvious in talking to/seeing you:
I’ve got six fingers on each hand. I don’t wear shoes. Or bras. Ever.
Also my accent screams ‘backwoods hick.’
d. Name something not-at-all obvious in talking to/seeing you:
Well, the fairy thing is kind of out of the bag now, but you still really can’t tell that by looking at me. And I’m afraid of crumbling at any given moment.
e. What's something you want fellow residents to know about you?
I am older than all of you. Possibly combined. I will also still laugh at preteen sex jokes.
f. What's something you don't want fellow residents to know about you (but that your player wants to reveal)?
My biological parents were full brother and sister.
g. What's something you fear?
Rockhouse. I’m not convinced he’s not going to walk through that door one day.
Also I’m just a little afraid that I’m going to watch everyone die of old age and slowly go mad living here for eons by myself. Just a little.
h. What's something you miss?
Bliss can be a pain in my ass, but I still miss my sister.
And my husband.i. What's the most important promise you've ever made?
“I do.”
j. Name something your player really wants to do with you.
We just blew our last good idea. Still working on a new one.
k. Name one character you don't know much about who you might be interested in getting to know.
I need to have a thread with the itsy bitsy spider. And with Percy. And I think I’d really like Rocket. Bucky, since that first thread didn't go far, but we both know a thing or two about being broken. And Hathaway, we clearly need to jam.
l. What kind of connections are you interested in making? What types of people are you most likely to make those connections with?
Hm. I guess this answers the ‘what to do with me’ question, but I could probably stand to actually mentor someone intentionally. I’m afraid of fucking up a young mind.
Sunny Nwazue
Magic, dancing, sports, books.
b. Name something you don't like (preferably something you might encounter):
White nonsense.
c. Name something obvious in talking to/seeing you:
I’m albino.
d. Name something not-at-all obvious in talking to/seeing you:
My relationship with my body and being perceived as attractive is complicated and quite simply, I don’t try with men because I know this is a problem and I don’t want to inflict it on other people when I know I’m going to be irrational and bitchy. I know. I’m well aware I’m not ugly or anything, but there’s a world of racism and colonialism and cultural identity that’s led to it being not just acceptable but normal for people to cuss me out and spit on me for looking the way I do. Albino is a synonym for ugly. You hear that enough, you start to internalize something, and in my case, it’s that no one is ever really going to think I’m pretty. Except maybe for clueless white boys who think I’m exotic.
e. What's something you want fellow residents to know about you?
I am both. Whatever your question is, I am both.
f. What's something you don't want fellow residents to know about you (but that your player wants to reveal)?
When I was twelve, I watched two men die. One showed me unconditional kindness. One murdered my grandmother. I’m not over it.
g. What's something you fear?
That I don’t know what turned the most brilliant Leopard Person of our time into a complete monster.
h. What's something you miss?
Orlu.
i. What's the most important promise you've ever made?
Probably the trust knot with Orlu and Chichi. That was where it all started.
j. Name something your player really wants to do with you.
Apparently explore all those aforementioned vulnerabilities about attractiveness and men. Great.
k. Name one character you don't know much about who you might be interested in getting to know.
Lara, still, I guess.
l. What kind of connections are you interested in making? What types of people are you most likely to make those connections with?
Deeper friendships with people of color.
