Here, have a few helpful scenarios for test-driving. Feel free to ignore them and make your own.

I.
Wherever you were, you aren't any longer. You took a turn, a step, blinked and you're somewhere else entirely. A long dusty road leads from nowhere to an oasis (or a nightmare, depending on your taste) of pink and bright light in the midst of the scrub desert and there's nothing and no one else in sight. If you linger long enough on the road, one of the Inn's residents will find you, but you feel noticeably drawn to come inside.

The pink and gold lobby looks like a bunny puked Easter everywhere, and the guy at the reservation desk looks a sort of silly putty shade of pinkish grey. He knows you by name and has a room reserved for you, but other than offering you fresh towels, that's all he has to say. Chances are, one of the residents will intercept you before you talk to Darryl the shade. They'll give you a guest basket with toiletries and chocolates and whatever else Caroline thinks a newcomer needs, and explain (nicely) that you're stuck here, but hey, it's not so bad. It's pretty safe, anyway. At least... so far.

II.
The red, gold and gaudy pink of the Copper Cafe overflows with residents. It's morning, the one and only time nearly everyone finds themselves in the same space for a short window before going about their day. The scent of fresh coffee laces the air, mingling with the buttery aroma of fresh baked pastry. The shade who serves as a cook, Kahni, awaits any orders that include chicken (chicken, not eggs), and Carlos has staffed one of the residents who can cook to make anything else you'd like. Kitty's pouring drinks -- no reason not to drink bloody maries or mimosas on your permanent holiday. Grab a spot at the counter or take a seat at an empty table, now that you're a resident too, there's no better way to start your day.

"Manifest later." Clarice said. "I've looked like this since birth, green eyes and pointed ears, but teleporting that's since I was about fourteen." It depended on when mutants got their powers, but usually around middle or high school.

"Interesting. It sounds as if the onset of puberty changed the chemical balance in your body producing your abilities." Artie pushed up his glasses on the bridge of his nose and wondered if perhaps it was connected to something else besides gene mutation.

"Some people get it earlier, but yeah basically, that's the theory." Clarice waited for the waitress to pour them both cups of coffee before she added the whiskey to her own. She let Artie add his, since she didn't know if he took a lot or a little.

Artie did pour his own alcohol, just a splash to add to the coffee, then took a tentative sip. Perfect.

"Interesting. Clearly it's tied to not only the mutated gene but to the chemical imbalance that occurs with puberty and the body shifting. Do mutants change again when they are older and their body chemistry shifts as well?"

"Mutants usually don't get older." Clarice pointed out a little bitterly. "People don't like the different. Sentinel Services hunt them down and make lab rats out of them or worse. But the ones, I've heard that are older, don't change any more."

That brought back painful memories of his parents and World War 2. "Sentinel Services, do they only go after those they deem different?" Artie had scowled and he wasn't aware of doing that.

Clarice got the change in him instantly and wondered what in his past connected to that.

"Pretty much, and the people that harbor them, but their main targets are mutants, yeah. Why? You have something like that?"

"Yeah, only we called them Nazis and we defeated them in the forties." Artie made a face. "Sounds like your world is getting the same thing, different name."

"Yeah, we had those, too. They have the same mentality but there aren't death camps. At least not yet." Clarice made a face. "We're too useful to them as puppets, but the ones they can't control they want to kill."

"I'd like to say it surprises me that it's happening again, but sadly it doesn't." Artie sipped at his beverage. "Hopefully, wiser heads will prevail as it did last time with the Nazis."

"I doubt it, but it's nice to think so. When I came here, I was in a lab where a douche shot my friend just to get another mutant to do what he wanted. Pretty much shot a hostage to get his message across." That was definitely said with bitterness.

Artie scowled into his mug as he listened to Clarice. "Then I hope those bastards get what they deserve." In his mind, it was to be bronzed, though Clarice would likely have a different interpretation.
