* * *

Here, have a few helpful scenarios for test-driving. Feel free to ignore them and make your own.

I.
Wherever you were, you aren't any longer. You took a turn, a step, blinked and you're somewhere else entirely. A long dusty road leads from nowhere to an oasis (or a nightmare, depending on your taste) of pink and bright light in the midst of the scrub desert and there's nothing and no one else in sight. If you linger long enough on the road, one of the Inn's residents will find you, but you feel noticeably drawn to come inside.

The pink and gold lobby looks like a bunny puked Easter everywhere, and the guy at the reservation desk looks a sort of silly putty shade of pinkish grey. He knows you by name and has a room reserved for you, but other than offering you fresh towels, that's all he has to say. Chances are, one of the residents will intercept you before you talk to Darryl the shade. They'll give you a guest basket with toiletries and chocolates and whatever else Caroline thinks a newcomer needs, and explain (nicely) that you're stuck here, but hey, it's not so bad. It's pretty safe, anyway. At least... so far.

II.
The red, gold and gaudy pink of the Copper Cafe overflows with residents. It's morning, the one and only time nearly everyone finds themselves in the same space for a short window before going about their day. The scent of fresh coffee laces the air, mingling with the buttery aroma of fresh baked pastry. The shade who serves as a cook, Kahni, awaits any orders that include chicken (chicken, not eggs), and Carlos has staffed one of the residents who can cook to make anything else you'd like. Kitty's pouring drinks -- no reason not to drink bloody maries or mimosas on your permanent holiday. Grab a spot at the counter or take a seat at an empty table, now that you're a resident too, there's no better way to start your day.

III. Network

With the calm conversation coming from the woman, Maria's breathing was slowing down. She still felt confused, but she wasn't going to pass out. Even though she felt herself calming out, she reached into her pocket and pulled out a small vial. She opened the cap and waved it around her nose to inhale a few times. With a big exhale, she recapped the vial and put it back.

"Okay, okay... This cant be weirder than the time all of Roswell disappeared." She said mostly to herself.

She looked at Curnen. Michael would probably say not to trust her, but..

"You said this was the Madonna Inn. And you said magic and didn't blink at aliens." She replied. "So... So this is like some, fever dream that's real or something?"

"That'd make more sense than what we do know," Curnen admitted, shoving long black hair back over her shoulder. "It's more like an..." she chewed her lip, looking for the word. Finding words wasn't a struggle for her like it had been a year ago, but she was looking for something very specific right now and it took a moment. "An oubliette. We're a bunch of people who got taken out of our lives and put here. No explanation or nothing. Just fifty-ish people and the inn. Whoever or whatever brought us, ain't heard anything from 'em."

Maria tried to remember what an oubliette is and then remembered the movie Labyrinth. She sort of understood after that. She frowned.

"Wait, so. There's just a bunch of people stuck in some Inn... somewhere?" She replied. "I mean.. okay, so fine. There's a bunch of people stuck in some inn somewhere. But why me? I'm like, nobody. Well, not nobody, but I'm just some girl from a tourist-trap city."

She laughed at that. "I'm just some girl from a town so far up in bum-fuck Tennessee even most of the state dunno us. Curnen, by the way. Curnen Overbay."

Hearing the word 'Tennessee' helped orient Maria. At least she didn't say some weird planet name.

"I'm Maria DeLuca." She said, "I'm from Roswell. Everyone sort of knows it, but the only people who visit are super into aliens or science fiction. Everyone else just tries to get out."

She nodded. "Yeah, I heard of it." Though probably not in the way Maria would have expected; Curnen remembered the 1940s pretty clearly. Certainly more clearly than she did the seventies, eighties, or nineties which were a blur of sensations, mostly. "People try to get out of here too, by the way, but we haven't found the way out yet. But there'll be a room waiting for you. Everything we need's provided for, 'cept enough shit to do to get through the day, so we all try to find ways to keep busy."

"Are you saying it's boring here?" She asked with brow furrowed.

Maria looked around and couldn't help think about their trip to Vegas. And we thought that hotel was over the top.

"Is there like, and I can not believe I'm saying this, a school or something?" Maria asked, sighing. I've been hanging around Alex and Liz too much if I ask that first. "And there's like, no way at all to get a message to my mom or my friends?"

Curnen waggled a hand in a gesture of 'close enough,' which doubled as a casual display of her six fingers. Always best to get that surprise out of the way. "It can be slow." Whether or not that meant boring was up to each person, but to some it definitely was. For others, it suited them.

"And the answers to those questions are... sort of. The library--we got a library--matches up people who wanna teach with people who wanna learn things. And, unfortunately, no. I'm sorry."

Maria closed her eyes. She quietly mouthed numbers as she counted up to ten to calm herself down. When she opened her eyes, she seemed a bit more resigned.

"What do I do now? Get a room and just, what? Live like here like some weird episode of the Twilight Zone?" She asked, but sounded resigned.

Curnen made a soft, thoughtful sound in the back of her throat, then nodded. "Live, find projects, work, meet people, wait for the weird shit that happens from time to time. It takes getting used to, but most folk 'round here are good people."

Really she hadn't talked to anybody she didn't like at least a little. There was one person she refused to talk to since she'd scratch out her eyes, but that wasn't relevant to anybody but Curnen and she knew it.

"Most of the work that goes into keeping the place running is on us, so we all do what we can."

"So we're stuck in a hotel without room service?" She said. "If that's not cruel and unusual punishment, I don't know what is."

Maria sighed.

"Alright, alright. Fine." She continued. "Let's get this over with. Point me to the front desk so I can check in to my new life in a Scooby Do mystery."
