* * *

Here, have a few helpful scenarios for test-driving. Feel free to ignore them and make your own.

I.
Wherever you were, you aren't any longer. You took a turn, a step, blinked and you're somewhere else entirely. A long dusty road leads from nowhere to an oasis (or a nightmare, depending on your taste) of pink and bright light in the midst of the scrub desert and there's nothing and no one else in sight. If you linger long enough on the road, one of the Inn's residents will find you, but you feel noticeably drawn to come inside.

The pink and gold lobby looks like a bunny puked Easter everywhere, and the guy at the reservation desk looks a sort of silly putty shade of pinkish grey. He knows you by name and has a room reserved for you, but other than offering you fresh towels, that's all he has to say. Chances are, one of the residents will intercept you before you talk to Darryl the shade. They'll give you a guest basket with toiletries and chocolates and whatever else Caroline thinks a newcomer needs, and explain (nicely) that you're stuck here, but hey, it's not so bad. It's pretty safe, anyway. At least... so far.

II.
The red, gold and gaudy pink of the Copper Cafe overflows with residents. It's morning, the one and only time nearly everyone finds themselves in the same space for a short window before going about their day. The scent of fresh coffee laces the air, mingling with the buttery aroma of fresh baked pastry. The shade who serves as a cook, Kahni, awaits any orders that include chicken (chicken, not eggs), and Carlos has staffed one of the residents who can cook to make anything else you'd like. Kitty's pouring drinks -- no reason not to drink bloody maries or mimosas on your permanent holiday. Grab a spot at the counter or take a seat at an empty table, now that you're a resident too, there's no better way to start your day.

III. Network

"I'd offer, but I'm a terrible cook." This much was true. Thor'd been relegated to takeout and sandwich-making duties after he nearly set Jane Foster's place ablaze trying to fry some eggs.

"You just arrive?" he asks. Thor doesn't think he's seen him before, and he's made an effort to know everyone.

Cole nodded. "Yesterday. Still not sure this is real. I'm not supposed to be anymore."

"Be?"

Thor's confusion is obvious, drawn across his furrowed brow and slight frown.

"What do you mean?"

Okay. He hadn't actually meant to say that part out loud. Had he? Cole scrubbed a hand along the scruff of his beard, trying not to hear Cassie's voice in his head saying I tried.

"That was the idea." That had been the idea from the beginning. "Change the timeline, and I'd be erased. This me wouldn't have existed." It had gotten more complicated from there, but... yeah.

Thor can't even begin to get hi head around why anyone would want to be erased, but then he can think of a few reasons why someone would volunteer to snuff themselves out of existence if it guaranteed a favorable outcome.

"Well, you're still around," he says, sitting down opposite Cole. "So once you've figured out your lunch you can figure out what you plan to do here."

If he was still around, was this just another loop he was stuck in?

Was Cassie... Did she have her life back?

Once a scav... Cole'd figure something out. He always did, the few times he'd had to do something other than just survive or bounce back and forth through time on a mission. "Yeah, and what do you do here?"

"Mostly just lounge about," Thor admits, casually. "I have this one kid I'm teaching to control his powers. He's teaching me how to draw comic books."

Mack was much better at controlling his powers at his age than Thor was.

"Other than that, I move things, carry things. I'm trying to take up gardening, but I'm not very good at it. I keep overwatering."

Wait. What?

"His powers?" The rest of it, all made a kind of sense. But unless this guy was Primary – and he didn't, as Jennifer would've said, 'talk the talk' – Cole didn't have any idea what kind of powers he could mean.

"Yes, powers," Thor says. Powers are such a normal part of Thor's life that it doesn't even occur to him that it might not be a part of Cole's. "He has fire powers, and I have lightning."

Cole just looked a moment, then nodded slowly. "Yeah, um, I think you might be reading too many of those comic books, man. Powers. Like, actual fire, lightning, powers. That's some crazy shit."
st_ormbreaker: (Looking for this?)

"Is it, though?"

Thor holds his hands out in an Oh well sort of gesture, lightning sparkling a brilliant blue-white between the gaps in his fingers.

What the –

"How the hell do you do that?" Cole wouldn't say he'd seen everything, but he'd seen a whole lot more than most. It had to be some kinda trick, right?
st_ormbreaker: (Thor God of... well you know.)

"Well," Thor begins, looking at one of his hands. The lightning between his finger begins to sizzle out. "Generally, I just think really hard about it, then I feel a bit of a tingle right here."

Thor presses a hand to his abdomen.

"And I just push that out of me, and..."

Lightning forms between his fingers once more.

"So it's like a fart." Probably not, but the way he described it, come on, what else was Cole supposed to think. He tried not to laugh, pressing his lips together around the smile he couldn't stop. "You're telling me you fart lightning. From your fingertips."
st_ormbreaker: (Laughing.)

That's enough to draw a laugh from Thor.

"Something like that," he says, still mirthful. "Not just from my fingertips, though. If we were outside, well..."

Thor looks astonishingly smug.

"So are there no people with powers where you come from?" This man seems more like an outlier rather than the norm, at least here.
